Summertime is a wonderful opportunity to go outdoors with your children, take in some Vitamin D from the sun and even educate your family on the benefits of sustainable living.

You can make the experience fun by customizing the children’s tools and getting their participation on which seeds to plant.

To know which fruits and vegetables to plant in the summer, utilize these tools:

Garden.org provides links to the USDA Hardiness Zone Finder. Vegetables and fruits vary in which temperatures they grow best within.

TheGardenHelper.com provides a garden calendar to help you know what to plant & when (includes plants AND vegetables & fruits).

KidsGardening.org provides you with a wide variety of ideas and tips on gardening with your children!

By growing your own garden, you empower your family in a variety of ways. For starters, you contribute to your own health by eating foods that are freshly plucked from the soil full of nutrients and live enzymes. You also help your children understand how food gets to the table, providing a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature and food. Working together outside in a garden also gives children a healthy dose of work and play away from the computer, tv and other electronic devices that consume a lot of attention these days.

Need a basic tutorial on how to get started and factors to consider? WikiHow.com provides a straightforward step-by-step gardening 101 guide.

Enjoy the quality time you create gardening with your family in the great outdoors!
